NGT | Assessing the Impact: Efficacy of Punjab's Noise Level Standards for Mixed Land Use Areas
Recently, on 05.02.2024, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) Principal Bench disposed of the Misc. Application No. 122/2023 in Original Application No. 487/2022. The matter pertains to Jagjeevan Singh versus Punjab Pollution Control Board (PPCB) and holds significant implications for noise pollution, particularly in reference to mixed zones.
Jagjeevan Singh filed an application before the NGT seeking the closure of Mahindra Industrial Corporation, a small scale proprietary industrial unit, operating in Partap Nagar, Ludhiana, situated just opposite to his residence. The Chief Engineer of PPCB reported that, in 2021, the noise pollution level at the entry gate of the industry ranged from 84.7 dB(A) to 85.9 dB(A) during operation and from 48.1 dB(A) to 48.2 dB(A) when not operational. Inside the applicant’s residence, the noise level was between 75.8 dB(A) and 76.2 dB(A) when the industry was operational and between 57.9 dB(A) and 58.0 dB(A) when the industry was not in operation.
